On May 12, 2009, the Cameron County Bar Association and the TRLA teamed up again for the last pro bono divorce clinic for 2008 - 2009.  With assistance from Judge Leonel Alejandro and staff members' Corina Garcia, bailiff Moises Rivera, District Clerk's staff Rosie Sotelo and Rosa Maria Ochoa and CCBA members and attorneys, 12 petitions were signed and 15 new petitions were filed.

Willacy County CJP Launched

On May 14, 2009, several Willacy County residents participated in the inaugural session of the CJP at the Raymondville Courthosue.  Private attorneys James Hunter (Cameorn County Bar Association President), Nemecio Lopez, Bland Puente, Ryan Solis and Seferino Treviño, Jr. volunteered their time and resources.  District Clerk Gilbert Lozano and his staff were available to process the pleadings.  All the volunteers involved are excited about beginning the CJP in Willacy County.  This program will empower low-income Willacy county residents with the resources they need to get a divorce.

Pro Bono Section Awards Announced

State Bar of Texas Sections and Bar Organizations Recognized for Programs That Increase Legal Services for the Poor

The Cameron County Bar Association was recently recognized for its Pro Bono Divorce Clinic. The clinic is a night court involving volunteer attorneys, judges, court reporters, and bailiffs all coming together to aid indigent county residents. Volunteer attorneys train local volunteer family law specialists to prove-up pro bono divorces.
